Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista in Angri

  • Visit: about 20 min
Pictured: Angri · Pagawiki · Public domain · resized

Angri's old abbey church, built in 1302 and later a distinguished collegiate church, with a rusticated façade, Renaissance portals and a large gilded organ.

The church of San Giovanni Battista was built in 1302 over an older temple from 1100, at the wish of Vincenzo Caiazzo, a cavalry captain in the service of the Orsini. In 1475 Pope Sixtus IV raised it to the rank of distinguished collegiate church. The Romanesque façade, redone in the 18th century in Catalan-style rustication, keeps three Renaissance marble portals and one of its original rose windows.Inside we find a Latin-cross plan with three naves and eight side chapels. We are struck by the wooden gallery with a gilded wooden organ of about three thousand pipes, covering the whole inner façade. Behind the great high altar, the apse holds a fine wooden choir with stalls. We recommend looking up and taking time over the details.
