Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Marcianise

  • Visit: about 20 min

The Annunziata of Marcianise, a Renaissance church with a gilded coffered ceiling, a bell tower of 1574 and works by Solimena and Stanzione.

In the centre of Marcianise the Church of the Santissima Annunziata shows off an elegant Renaissance façade. The 16th-century design is attributed to Benvenuto Tortelli and was later modified by Matteo Salerno; in the 18th century the building was restored and enlarged. We like the exposed-tuff bell tower of 1574, detached from the church and designed by Ambrogio Attendolo. The three-aisled interior is a little treasure chest of art. We recommend looking up at the gilded wooden coffered ceiling, with Francesco Solimena's Assumption of 1697 at its centre, and then seeking out Massimo Stanzione's Annunciation behind the high altar, the frescoes by Nicola Malinconico and the 18th-century organ with its decorated case.
