Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Marcianise

  • Visit: about 20 min

Church of medieval origin, perhaps the oldest core of Marcianise, with a Deposition panel dated 1482.

On Via Santoro stands Santa Maria delle Grazie, which tradition dates to the 10th–11th centuries and which may be the oldest core of Marcianise. Long closed after damage in the 1980 earthquake, it was restored thanks to the contributions of local residents, and the works brought to light two Byzantine-style single-light windows on the outer wall. The interior has a single nave. We recommend looking at the 17th-century painting in the apse of the Triumph of the Virgin and, above all, the late Gothic panel of the Deposition, dated 1482, the oldest work in the church. We also like knowing that beneath the floor there is a crypt, once used for burials.
