The parish church of Venticano, a village whose historic name recalls the church of Santa Maria and the bell tower that survived 1799.

In Venticano, in the middle Calore valley, the church of Santa Maria e Sant'Alessio is the seat of the village parish. Its Marian dedication recalls a long history: according to sources, the church of Santa Maria di Venticano was founded by an abbot of Montevergine, William IV, and later became a dependency of the abbey of Santa Sofia. One episode strikes us in particular: in 1799 General Championnet's French troops destroyed the village, and only the church and its bell tower were left standing. Hence the name Campanarello ("little bell tower"), by which the village is still known today. We suggest visiting it with this story in mind.
