The main church of Apice Vecchia, of Lombard origin, with three naves, 15th-century polychrome marble altars and a travertine tomb.
In Apice Vecchia stands the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, the main religious building of the old village, already present in the Lombard period. In the 15th century it depended directly on the Patriarch of Constantinople and controlled several parishes in the area. The original bell tower was brought down by the 1930 earthquake and replaced by a more recent one.The plan is a Latin cross, with three naves marked by Ionic colonnades. On the façade we are struck by the travertine tomb of the archpriest Angelo Germano, from the first half of the 15th century. Inside, some of the old polychrome marble altars survive, along with two 18th-century angels beside the high altar, a wooden choir and two 16th-century paintings of the Resurrection and the Ascension. We suggest pairing it with a walk through the old village.
