The old mother church of the abandoned old town of San Pietro Infine, documented from 1513 and a witness to the 1943 battle.
In the heart of the old town of San Pietro Infine, at the spot known as Picco della terra, stands the old mother church of San Michele Arcangelo. We do not know when it was founded, but the earliest records date from 1513. The building had a three-nave Latin-cross plan, with two separate entrances on the transept, one for men and one for women, framed by a 16th-century portal.We are moved to think that scenes from John Huston's documentary on the 1943 Battle of San Pietro were filmed within these walls, and later scenes from Monicelli's The Great War. After a restoration, the church is now in a state of neglect: we suggest viewing it respectfully during your visit to the Historical Memory Park, keeping to the permitted routes.
