Remains of a small rural church documented from 1570, on a spur of Monte Sambucaro inside an ancient Samnite enclosure.

On the southern slopes of Monte Sambucaro, above San Pietro Infine, a rocky spur holds the ruins of the small rural church of Sant'Eustachio. They stand inside an ancient Samnite fortified enclosure, made of dry-laid limestone blocks. The church is documented from 1570, but by 1761 it was already abandoned and used as a stable. We like tracing the building's plan on the ground: a rectangular hall a few metres long with an entrance to the west and a small sacristy on the north side. Nearby you can see a cistern lined with cocciopesto and a lime kiln. We suggest climbing up with suitable shoes and care, to enjoy a place where archaeology, history and mountain scenery meet.
