18th-century church in Bellona, built by the confraternity of San Michele and a place of remembrance for the 54 martyrs of 1943.

A few steps from the Church of San Secondino, near Piazza Umberto I, stands Bellona's Church of San Michele Arcangelo. It was built in 1760 by the confraternity of San Michele, founded in 1721 and still active today, a testimony to a cult of St Michael that had spread for centuries throughout the Terra di Lavoro, starting from Capua and its hamlets. This church is above all a place of remembrance. On 7 October 1943 the Nazis gathered about a hundred and fifty inhabitants in its nave on the pretext of work: fifty-four of them were then killed in a tuff quarry on the edge of the village. It is one of the most brutal massacres in southern Italy. We invite you to enter in a spirit of reflection, remembering the martyrs of Bellona.
