A church on Piazza Libertà in Scampitella, entirely rebuilt after the 1930 earthquake that destroyed the village.

On Piazza Libertà, in Scampitella, stands the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione. The village, at about 775 metres between the valleys of the Fiumarella and Calaggio streams, long shared the fortunes of Trevico, until it gained autonomy in 1948. It is a small Apennine centre, now almost joined to nearby Portolecchia, in Apulian territory. The church tells the village's story well: the 1930 earthquake destroyed the settlement and the building was entirely rebuilt. We like visiting it as a sign of the rebirth of this community, which also faced the earthquakes of 1962 and 1980. We suggest getting there at a relaxed pace, enjoying the views of the upper Ufita valley.
