A rock church carved in a cave, with a lion portal, an Annunciation shrine, ossuary crypts and the chapel of the Immacolata.

The rock church of San Michele Arcangelo opens with a simple portal, on whose jambs stand out an archaic-looking lion and lioness. Entering, on the right, we find a well and, five metres up, a shrine decorated with small arches, flanked by the Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Annunciate. Above are fragments of a dragon, perhaps part of a Saint Michael defeating evil; beside it, a fresco of John the Baptist. We recommend noticing the floor slabs leading to three underground crypts, once used as ossuaries, and the funerary monument of Abbot Francesco Caracciolo, from 1585. In the deepest part of the cave lies the chapel of the Immacolata, with a 17th-century canvas set in a wooden frame and frescoes all around.
