Maddaloni Cathedral

  • Visit: about 20 min

Basilica of the Corpus Domini, Maddaloni's main church, rebuilt in the 18th century with a high altar designed by Luigi Vanvitelli.

Below the medieval castle, between Piazza Umberto I and Piazza De Sivo, stands the Basilica of the Corpus Domini, Maddaloni's main church and a minor basilica since 2003. Founded in the mid-16th century as a confraternity chapel, it was rebuilt from its foundations during the 18th century, probably with a design role for Antonio Canevari, and consecrated in 1765. It has a Latin-cross plan, with a tall dome lit by eight windows and a vault rich in stucco. We recommend approaching the presbytery to admire the high altar designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1762 and the wooden choir with two tiers of stalls. We then like seeking out the canvases by Pompeo Landolfo, a 16th-century painter well represented in the church, such as the Last Supper and the Marriage of the Virgin. There are also shell-shaped marble holy-water stoups and numerous side chapels with wooden statues and paintings from various periods.
