Roccamonfina sits inside the caldera of an extinct volcano, at the heart of a regional park, and its woods produce one of Campania's finest chestnuts, the Roccamonfina PGI chestnut. Every autumn the town dedicates its biggest festival to it, drawing visitors from all over the Caserta area and southern Lazio for five weekends in a row.

In the old town you can eat roast chestnuts, glazed chestnuts, sweets made with chestnut flour and first and main courses based on porcini mushrooms. Around the stalls there is live music and entertainment in the squares, craft markets, and guided hikes in the chestnut groves. The stalls open in the late afternoon; entry is free.

Our tip: during the day, walk up to the Lattani sanctuary, set in the woods just above the town, then come back for dinner when the festival comes alive.
