Archaeological site · Pozzuoli (NA)

Remains of a Roman bath complex and residence overlooking the gulf, traditionally linked to Cicero's villa at Puteoli.
On a wide natural terrace facing the gulf, along a stretch of the ancient Via Domitiana, lie the remains of two Roman complexes: a 2nd-century AD bath complex, lower down, and a late 1st-century residence. Tradition calls them the Villa of Cicero, because sources mention a property of the great orator near the stadium.According to ancient texts, Cicero inherited this villa in 45 BC, and Emperor Hadrian, who died at Baiae in AD 138, was temporarily buried here. Excavations have revealed tunnels, an underground room perhaps used to store farm tools, a cistern and various vaulted rooms. We like this blend of literary history and archaeology.
