A monumental Roman necropolis along the ancient road between Puteoli and Capua, with columbarium mausoleums and underground burial chambers.
Along the route of the ancient road linking Puteoli and Capua lies the monumental necropolis of San Vito. Recent excavations have freed six funerary buildings of which only the façades were visible, long buried by debris washed down from the hill of the Cigliano crater. We are struck by the theatrical effect of these tombs lining the road. Each building has an underground chamber with rows of niches for cinerary urns and benches later reused for later burials, and an upper floor with an enclosure. Two mausoleums of the columbarium type stand out, one of them from the 1st century AD with a circular chamber. The area is currently closed: it can only be viewed from outside.
