18th-century palazzo on Piazza Roma in Cerreto Sannita, with curious tuff monograms on the cornice and a set for the film Maddalena.

Overlooking Piazza Roma in Cerreto Sannita is Palazzo Nardella, built just after the 1688 earthquake by Dr Melchiorre Nardella, the son of a notary. It is an example of civil architecture from the 18th-century reconstruction and in the 1950s it was the backdrop for some film shoots, including a scene from the 1954 film Maddalena.Although radically renovated in the 1970s, it retains its original stone portal. Above all we like the grey tuff monograms along the cornice, carved in 1723 by Cesare Nardella: they interweave the initials of Melchiorre's three children, Aurelia, Emilia and Cesare. We recommend looking up as you stroll across the square.
