18th-century palazzo in Cerreto Sannita with a sober exterior, a double staircase unique in the town and Rococo grotesques.

From the outside Palazzo Magnati in Cerreto Sannita seems almost shy: the façade is sober and undecorated, the only exception being the depressed-arch portal with a large stone frame. Once owned by Domenico Gizzio, treasurer to Count Carafa, it was bought by 1733 by Nicola Magnati, who in 1751 enlarged it by incorporating a neighbouring house. Its interior is considered among the most beautiful and best preserved in the town. Above all we like the Neapolitan-style double staircase, the only one in Cerreto, which leads to an atrium frescoed with Rococo grotesques. A curiosity: in 1955 some scenes of the film La bella mugnaia were shot here, with the palazzo serving as the governor's residence.
