Flavian Amphitheatre of Pozzuoli
Il terzo anfiteatro romano d'Italia per grandezza, a Pozzuoli, con i sotterranei ben conservati.
Archaeological site · Pozzuoli (NA)

A stretch of Roman necropolis with two-storey columbaria, kitchens and cisterns for funeral banquets and façades marked by pilasters.
This stretch of necropolis is made up mainly of columbaria with an underground chamber, a small altar and, in some cases, a kitchen and cistern for preparing the ritual banquet in honour of the dead. The mausoleums formed a real theatrical backdrop along the road, with façades punctuated by pilasters or half-columns and doors framed by blocks of piperno and thresholds of lava stone.Inside they are on two levels: below the tombs, above the kitchen, cisterns and small funerary triclinia. Over time many monuments were filled with simpler burials, in pits or in tuff chests covered with tiles. We like seeing how rites, daily customs and the transformations of a place of memory can be read together here.
