A group of fourteen Roman columbaria and a funerary enclosure with a central mausoleum, used between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD.
The Via Celle necropolis brings together fourteen mausoleums of the type known as columbarium, plus a rectangular building constructed around a courtyard with a mausoleum at its centre. There are four building phases, spanning the second half of the 1st century BC to the early 2nd century AD.We are particularly intrigued by the rectangular building, interpreted as the seat of a collegium funeraticium: an association through which people of modest means could secure, for a small fee, a dignified burial. The area is currently closed to the public, but its story is worth knowing as you pass along the road.
