The Torrione is one of the few visible remains of old Cerreto, the village destroyed by the 1688 earthquake.

Among the ruins of old Cerreto, the medieval settlement destroyed by the earthquake of 5 June 1688, the Torrione stands out as one of the few structures still clearly visible. In the past it served as a prison. The old village already existed in the 10th century, when an imperial diploma of 972 mentioned its Church of San Martino. In 2010 the municipality bought the Torrione with the aim of creating an archaeological park and bringing to light other remains of the lost town, such as the ducal palace, the collegiate church and stretches of the walls. We love the contrast with today's Cerreto, rebuilt on a regular plan after the earthquake. We recommend checking visiting arrangements beforehand.
