On the Calore at Solopaca, the site of the famous Bourbon suspension bridge of 1835: platforms, pillars and the original plaque survive.

Over the River Calore, near Solopaca, stood one of the first iron suspension bridges in Italy. Designed by Luigi Giura, with iron parts made in the Calabrian works at Mongiana, it was inaugurated in 1835 in the presence of Ferdinand II, who dedicated it to his wife Maria Cristina. It linked the Telesina valley to Mount Taburno and even withstood a flood in 1852.In 1943 the retreating Germans blew it up and after the war it was replaced by a reinforced-concrete bridge. We are glad that the two semicircular platforms, four pillars and the original 1835 plaque of the Bourbon bridge survive, while the marble lions were replaced after a theft. We recommend combining the visit with a stop at the nearby Fontana della Sala.
