- Not to be missed
- Visit: about 3 h

The Roman town buried by Vesuvius in AD 79, with multi-storey houses and wooden structures still preserved.
Herculaneum was overwhelmed by the eruption of AD 79 and covered by a thick layer of volcanic material, which preserved upper floors, beams and even wooden furniture. It is smaller than Pompeii and can be visited in a couple of hours.Highlights include the House of the Bicentenary, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite with its mosaic, the baths and the ancient beach, where the skeletons of inhabitants trying to flee were found.
