An observatory founded in 1986 and named after the local astronomer who in 1613 took over the chair once held by Galileo.

We like telling you about this small outpost of science in the hills of Montecorvino Rovella. The Astronomical Observatory bears the name of Gian Camillo Gloriosi, an astronomer born right here who in 1613 took up the chair previously held by Galileo Galilei. The facility was founded in 1986 to keep alive the link between this figure and a passion for studying the sky.In 1989, for the twentieth anniversary of the Moon landing, the observatory hosted an international meeting with astronauts and cosmonauts, and since then it has carried out intense outreach work. In 2001 the US Minor Planet Center assigned it international code 229, marking its entry into research. We recommend a visit if you love astronomy.
