Church of the Santissimo Salvatore in Cava de' Tirreni

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 289 m

In the hamlet of Passiano, Cava, the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore dates from around 1000 and was rebuilt in the 18th century by Paolo Carleo.

In the hamlet of Passiano, the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore, dedicated to the Transfiguration, has very old roots: founded around the year 1000, in 1088 it was donated to the Badia della Santissima Trinità, and its ties with the abbey were confirmed by 12th-century popes. From 1743 it was demolished and rebuilt to a design by Paolo Carleo, and it was solemnly consecrated in 1822.The interior has three naves, and we are struck above all by the Vietri majolica floor, laid in 1792. Badly damaged by the 1980 earthquake, the church returned to worship in 2000 thanks to the efforts of the faithful. We suggest also taking a look at the adjoining confraternity oratory, with gilded stucco and carved wooden stalls.
