Basilica of Santa Maria dell'Olmo

  • Visit: about 20 min

A minor basilica since 1931, Santa Maria dell'Olmo is the heart of Cava's devotion, with a convent and 16th-century cloister.

The Basilica of Santa Maria dell'Olmo is the best-loved sanctuary in Cava de' Tirreni: here Santa Maria Incoronata dell'Olmo is venerated, patron of the city together with St Adiutor. Its documented history begins in 1482, when according to tradition St Francis of Paola laid the first stone. In July 1931 Pope Pius XI raised it to a minor basilica. Next to the church is the convent, with a cloister of 1582 that we suggest not missing. We also like visiting during the patronal feast, when Piazza dell'Olmo comes alive and the city gathers around its Madonna.
