Confraternity church in Cerreto Sannita, with a Madonna by Silvestro Jacobelli and a canvas showing Constantinople in flames.

A few steps from the cathedral of Cerreto Sannita stands the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, also known as «the Congregazione». It is linked to a confraternity founded in 1616 by a Capuchin friar. The first church, near the walls of old Cerreto, was damaged by the 1688 earthquake and rebuilt in the new town planned by the Carafa counts. It is an intimate building, with a simple façade and a stone portal salvaged from the earlier church; the bell tower dates from 1905 and the dome is frescoed. We recommend lingering over the 1758 statue of the Madonna by Silvestro Jacobelli, the canvas by Francesco Palumbo depicting Constantinople in flames and the Nativity by Basilio De Luca from 1698.
