Church · Pozzuoli (NA)

Church built outside the Rione Terra on land that rose from the sea through 16th-century bradyseism.
The history of this church is bound up with bradyseism. In the Middle Ages Pozzuoli was confined to the Rione Terra, and the area where Santa Maria delle Grazie now stands was still under the sea.Between the late 15th and the 16th century, up to the eruption of Monte Nuovo in 1538, the ground rose and a broad strip of coast re-emerged, where the city could expand. We like to think of this church as a sign of that changing landscape. The Region lists it as closed.
