Church of Santa Maria della Pietra Santa

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 377 m

Cava's Pietrasanta church is linked to the passage of Pope Urban II in 1092, on his way to consecrate the Badia.

Among the churches of Cava de' Tirreni, the Pietrasanta ("Holy Stone") holds an evocative story. Its origins are linked to 1092, the year Pope Urban II climbed up to the Badia della Santissima Trinità for its consecration: according to tradition, the church was built right against the boulder on which the pontiff stopped to rest.We like this interweaving of history and popular devotion, which binds the small building to the great Benedictine abbey. We suggest visiting it as part of an itinerary towards Corpo di Cava and the Badia, ideally following the pope's own route and enjoying the wooded views of the valley.
