Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo e delle Anime del Purgatorio

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 209 m

Baroque church in Cava de' Tirreni, begun in 1752 by the architects Felice and Domenico Cafaro, with an inlaid marble altar.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo e delle Anime del Purgatorio (the Assumption and the Souls in Purgatory) is one of the 18th-century landmarks of Cava de' Tirreni. Its foundation deed is dated 1749 and works began in 1752 under the architects Felice and Domenico Cafaro, members of a family of Cava builders. Its language is Baroque: we suggest pausing at the high altar in inlaid marble and the balustrade with its mixtilinear profile, details that reveal the care of the craftsmen of the time. We like including it in a stroll through the town centre, discovering the many churches that dot Cava.
