Cerreto Sannita church with an onion-domed majolica bell tower, a polychrome marble altar and a burial crypt open to visitors.

In the old town of Cerreto Sannita stands the Church of San Rocco, already recorded in 1613 as a chapel outside the walls of old Cerreto and rebuilt after the 1688 earthquake. We are immediately struck by its bell tower, crowned by an onion dome clad in majolica tiles. Closed after the earthquakes of 2013 and 2014, it reopened for worship in 2017.The single-nave interior preserves the high altar in polychrome marble from 1784, the wooden statue of the Madonna della Provvidenza and a St Roch from 1686, as well as eight 19th-century oval canvases. Beneath the church is a crypt used for burials until 1869 and reopened in 1991. We recommend coming on 16 August, the feast day of St Roch.
