In Pogerola, above Amalfi, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo was built between 1179 and 1181 by the merchant Orso Castellomata, who invested the profits of his trade in a family church. The bishop exempted him from taxes and granted him land near Gragnano. On his death the church passed to the bishop and then to a monastery. It tells of the wealth of the merchants of the Republic of Amalfi.
