Village · Amalfi (SA)

The medieval heart of Amalfi, with alleys, stairways and covered passages running down from the Gravone valley to the beach.
The historic centre of Amalfi stretches from the deep Gravone valley down to the sea, partly clinging to rocky slopes and partly fanning out towards the beach. The layout is still medieval: winding streets, narrow passages, stepped ramps and covered passageways, with whitewashed masonry houses sometimes topped by exposed vaults. The main axis is Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi, from which alleys and stairways branch off towards the innermost parts of the town. Over everything towers the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, from the 9th century, renovated in Arab-Norman forms in 1203. We recommend getting lost without hurry: at every turn a glimpse of the sea or the valley opens up.
