Basilica of the Assumption in Santa Maria la Fossa, founded in 1084, with medieval frescoes and an 11th-century baptismal font.
The Basilica of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo was built in 1084 by Capuan nobles on the remains of a Lombard church. More Benedictine than Lombard in its forms, it is considered a sister of Sant'Angelo in Formis: three naves end in three apses. It was once famous for its great Easter candle. Damaged during the war in 1943, together with the bell tower, later rebuilt as a separate structure, it came back to life after years of restoration.Inside, columns, capitals and an 11th-century baptismal font await you, along with frescoes painted between the 11th and 16th centuries. We like seeking out the oldest ones in the central nave: St Stephen, the Works of Mercy, the Madonna of the Goldfinch and the Madonna of the Rabbit on a pillar. We suggest also noticing the 18th-century statues and the bust of St Restitutus attributed to Giacomo Colombo.
