The sailors' church of Agropoli, devoted to the Madonna of Constantinople, protector of fishermen, celebrated on 24 July with a procession at sea.

This church is the heart of Agropoli's seafaring devotion. Tradition says it was built after a statue of the Madonna was found in the sea, which Turkish raiders were unable to carry off during the 16th-century incursions. A confraternity was already active here in 1583, and the apostolic visitation of 1612 describes it as recently built, with burials reserved for sailors. We especially love 24 July, when the statue of the Madonna of Constantinople, protector of fishermen, is carried in procession down to the harbour. After sunset the celebration continues on the water, with flag-decked boats escorting the sacred image. We recommend being there: it is one of the most heartfelt moments of the Agropoli summer.
