Three-nave cathedral built between 1696 and 1709, with an octagonal dome rebuilt after the 1930 earthquake.
The cathedral was commissioned in 1696 by Bishop Giovan Battista La Morea, on the site of an older church that also housed four confraternities. Work was completed in 1709 with a three-nave basilica layout, altered several times because of frequent earthquakes.Its present appearance is due mainly to the works following the 1930 earthquake, which brought down the dome, later rebuilt on an octagonal base. After the 1980 earthquake a long restoration consolidated the building, returned to worshippers in 1988. We recommend visiting it together with the other monuments on the square.
