On the last bend of the Volturno, Castel Volturno's castle began as a Lombard outpost on an arch of the Roman bridge of the Via Domitiana.

Castel Volturno Castle has an unusual origin: rather than perching on a height, it was built on the riverbank, on the last bend of the Volturno just before its mouth, to control access from the sea. Its origins probably date to the 10th century, as a Lombard outpost against the Saracens, and it stands on an arch of the Roman bridge of the Via Domitiana.Over the centuries it passed from Roger II to Frederick II, withstood a long siege in 1460, and in the 17th century the keep became a bastion against pirates. We recommend strolling through the borgo of San Castrese, with lanes at right angles to the square on the model of Roman castra, and observing in the walls the reused paving stones, travertine and tuff, next to the 18th-century clock tower.
