Seat of the bishops in Cerreto Sannita, a palace rebuilt after the 1688 earthquake with an arcaded courtyard and a hall of coats of arms.

In Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, the Bishop's Palace of Cerreto Sannita is still the seat of the bishop and the diocesan curia. Its history is bound up with that of the town: destroyed by the 1688 earthquake, it was rebuilt by 1696 within the new town plan by Giovanni Battista Manni, and in the 19th century Bishop Luigi Sodo oversaw its restoration. It is a typical 18th-century Cerreto palazzo, with an entrance hall, a garden and a courtyard with a Renaissance-style loggia, while the façade alternates two orders of windows and oculi. We like the hall of coats of arms, painted in 1906 with the insignia of the bishops since 1577, and the inscription recalling the visit of St Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori in 1767. The upper floors are not open to visitors.
