Naples is an open-air museum: just get lost in its alleyways and you will find history and beauty at every corner. But its treasures also continue inside its historic palazzi, and to really get to know the city we recommend stepping into some of its museums. We suggest a local itinerary on foot, to be enjoyed over a full day, with three stops ranging from the 16th century to the art of today.
The stops on the itinerary
1. Palazzo d'Avalos, Chiaia
The 16th-century residence of the d'Avalos family, Marquises of Pescara and Vasto, renovated in 1751 by Mario Gioffredo in an already neoclassical style. For centuries it housed the family picture gallery.

2. Capodimonte Museum and Royal Forest
Its collections include the d'Avalos Collection itself, with the portraits linked to Titian, the tapestries of the Battle of Pavia and the mythological canvases of the 17th-century Neapolitan school.

3. MADRE – Donnaregina Museum of Contemporary Art
Palazzo Donnaregina, bought by the Campania Region in 2005, was transformed into a museum by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. We love it for its works by great names in contemporary art such as Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Mimmo Paladino, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol.
