Watchtower on the Tusciano

A round 16th-century watchtower near the Tusciano river, built against Saracen raids.

The tower on the Tusciano, round in plan, was built in 1563, as several documents in the diocesan archive of Salerno attest. It was part of the system of watchtowers ordered by the viceroy of Naples after frequent Saracen raids along the coast: from here fires and sound signals were used to raise the alarm.Once the danger had passed, the tower became a dwelling and still is today, which is why it cannot be visited and is admired from outside. Set into its walls is a 15th-century inscription, found in nearby fields, recording the grant of land to a soldier for military merit. We like it as an example of coastal defence still standing on the plain.
