Remains of the temple linked to the Isolympia games, founded in Naples in AD 2 in honour of Emperor Augustus.

Beneath piazza Nicola Amore, traces have re-emerged of a building mentioned by many ancient sources: the temple linked to the Sebasta Isolympia, erected in honour of Emperor Augustus. It was one of the most prestigious places in the city, devoted to the cult of the great games that Naples celebrated in gratitude to the emperor for his help after an earthquake. We love imagining these contests, founded in AD 2 and continuing until the 4th century: they were held every five years between July and August and drew athletes from all over the Mediterranean. We know their rules thanks to a fragmentary inscription found at Olympia, a copy of the Neapolitan one.
