The Capitolium of Pompeii, on the north side of the Forum, with Vesuvius behind it.

The Temple of Jupiter stands on a high podium at the end of the Forum and was the main temple of the Roman city, dedicated to the Capitoline Triad: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. It had been damaged by the earthquake of AD 62 and had not yet been restored at the time of the eruption. Its columns frame the view of Vesuvius.
