The Renaissance crypt of the Duomo, commissioned in 1497 by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa to house the relics of Saint Januarius.

Beneath the high altar of the Duomo we go down into the Succorpo, the crypt also known as the Confession of San Gennaro or the Carafa chapel. It was commissioned in 1497 by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa, when he brought the saint's relics back to Naples; they had been kept since 831 in the sanctuary of Montevergine.Completed in 1506, it is one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance in Naples, entirely in marble, with a coffered ceiling and the statue of the cardinal at prayer.
