Sant'Antonio Dottore Ecclesiastical Library
- Visit: about 40 min

The library of the convent of Sant'Antonio, with over twenty thousand volumes and an illuminated codex from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
The convent of Sant'Antonio in Nocera Inferiore was a centre of learning for centuries: between the 16th and 18th centuries it housed the Franciscan Provincial Studium, with a rich collection of books for students. Sadly the fire of 1638 and the plundering during the French decade and the suppressions of 1866 scattered much of that collection. The Sant'Antonio Dottore Library, established in 1954, now holds over twenty thousand volumes and rare old texts. We are especially moved by an illuminated codex made between the late 13th and early 14th centuries, with five books of the Decretals commissioned by Pope Gregory IX and compiled by Raymond of Peñafort. We recommend combining it with a visit to the convent.
