The Baroque chapel in the Cathedral where the blood of Saint Januarius and his treasure are kept, with frescoes by Domenichino and Lanfranco.

Inside Naples Cathedral opens the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, built by the Neapolitans following a vow to their patron saint during the plague of 1527. Here are kept the phials containing the blood of the saint, at the heart of the miracle of liquefaction. It is one of the masterpieces of the Baroque: the frescoes by Domenichino and Lanfranco make it the centre of Emilian painting in Naples. A curiosity: the chapel belongs not to the Curia but to the city, represented by the Deputazione. Next door, the Treasure museum displays extraordinary jewels.
