Remains of a 2nd-century AD villa with a columned atrium, an impluvium, bath rooms and mosaic floors.

About two kilometres from the centre of Ricigliano lie the remains of a Roman villa from the 2nd century AD, also known as the Villa of Ricilius, after the Roman commander to whom tradition attributes control of this territory. We like discovering how even the inland areas of the province of Salerno preserve such vivid traces of Roman life.Excavations have uncovered an atrium with four columns and an impluvium for collecting rainwater, together with the remains of bath rooms. We recommend looking carefully at the floors: there are sections in mosaic and others in opus spicatum, with small bricks laid in a herringbone pattern, a technique typical of Roman building.
