A 2nd-century AD Roman bath complex in Fuorigrotta, uncovered in 1939, with sea-themed mosaics.

Near the Mostra d'Oltremare lies a small treasure: the Roman baths of Via Terracina, brought to light in 1939 during the works for the large exhibition district. The complex dates from the first half of the 2nd century AD, but bears the marks of later alterations. It was built on several levels and received water from the Serino aqueduct, with walls in opus vittatum and brickwork. We like following the route of the ancient bathers: besides some shops, you come across the latrine with two mosaic dolphins, the changing room with a Nereid seated on a Triton's tail and the frigidarium, decorated with a procession of fantastic creatures. We suggest looking for the mosaics on the theme of the wedding of Poseidon and Amphitrite, sadly badly damaged.
