Late 1st-century Roman baths that resurfaced after the 1943 bombing, with a relief of the god Mithras.

In the heart of the old town, the archaeological area of Carminiello ai Mannesi came to light after the 1943 bombing, which destroyed the church of Santa Maria del Carmine above and the nearby buildings. Beneath the rubble appeared the remains of a Roman bath complex, dating from around the end of the 1st century. We like reading the city's layers here: an apsed room with a black-and-white mosaic perhaps belonged to a Republican-era house, later incorporated into a larger building with vaulted rooms. We recommend looking for the pipes, the marble basins and the relief of the god Mithras sacrificing a bull.
