Ponte Finocchio

Old bridge of Roman origin over the Calore, rebuilt many times, beneath the crag linked to the burial of Manfred of Swabia.
Ponte Finocchio, also called Ponte Foeniculum, crosses the Calore river along the branch of the Via Latina that rejoined the Appian Way near Benevento. Destroyed many times by floods and just as many times rebuilt, it shows the marks of different eras: a Roman base, a medieval section and modern works.We are fascinated by the crag above it, identified with the "grave mora" (heavy cairn) mentioned by Dante: here the body of Manfred of Swabia, who fell at the Battle of Benevento in 1266 against Charles of Anjou, was buried for a time. A place where history and poetry meet.
