A noble palace formed in the early 18th century by merging a 15th-century building with neighbouring houses, which gave its name to the Calata San Marco.

Palazzo Caracciolo di San Marco shows well how noble residences grew in 18th-century Naples, a crowded city where aristocrats enlarged their homes by buying neighbouring buildings. It all began when the marchioness Silvia Maria Caracciolo di Cavaniglia bought what remained of a 15th-century palace for 8,500 ducats. After the first embellishment works, the marchioness bought an adjoining house and then another adjacent room, and in 1704 work was under way to join the different wings into a single residence. The Marquis of San Marco lived here, giving his name both to the palace and to the street, the Calata San Marco. We like looking at its balconies with their pediments.
