At 789 metres it is the highest peak on the island of Ischia, a volcano-tectonic block that has been rising for about 100,000 years.

Mount Epomeo is the roof of the island of Ischia: at 789 metres it dominates the landscape, and all six of the island's municipalities are spread around its slopes, from Ischia to Casamicciola, from Lacco Ameno to Forio, and on to Serrara Fontana and Barano. We like to think of this mountain as the heart that holds Ischia together.Geologically it is not a classic volcano, but a volcano-tectonic horst, a block uplifted at the centre of a system of active faults. Its uplift began about 100,000 years ago. We recommend climbing it to discover the island from a completely different perspective.
