Village that grew around a Roman tower and an ancient cult of Hercules, later a Lombard and Norman castle, with the church of the Santissimo Salvatore.

The historic centre of Castelpagano has very ancient roots. Where the ducal palace and the church of the Santissimo Salvatore stand today there was perhaps a place of worship of the Italic Hercules, as two small statues found here suggest; in Roman times a tower is thought to have been built to defend the nearby pagus.Under the Lombards the centre took the name Castellum Paganum, the tower became a garrison and a first church arose on the site of the pagan cult. The Normans built the castle between 1172 and 1183. We like wandering the alleys looking for traces of these layers of history.
